The Charioteer - first US edition

by Mary Renault

This is a coming-of-awareness story involving three gay men during World War II, a wounded veteran, a conscientious objector, and a naval officer. The title is taken from Plato's 'Phaedrus'. The charioteer is the self, the winged horses which draw him the spirit and the flesh, or perhaps more accurately aspiration and desire. The conflict implied by the myth is the theme of this book.

The book has decorated boards with an olive green cloth spine, title in a cream color matching one of the colors used in the decoration of the boards; clean inside and out, very slight edge wear, some browning of pages and slight spine roll; better than very good for a 45-year-old book.

Jacket is price intact at $4.50; small tear at front panel and spine, mild edge wear, some spine fading.
