A Distant Mirror - first US edition

by Barbara Tuchman

Subtitled "The Calamitous 14th Century", the author reveals to us both the great rhythms of history and the grain and texture of domestic life as it was lived: what childhood was like, what marriage was like; how money, taxes and war dominated the lives of serf, noble, and clergy alike, and on and on. Fascinating and accessible perspective offered on life at that time.

Book has black cloth board, with the title stamped in gold on the spine, and her inititals stamped on the front cover. A 1th century European map illustrates the front end papers, while a 14th century artist's rendering of 'Nicopolis and other Castles on the Danube" illustrate the rear end papers. Clean inside and out, no bumped corners, overall VG+.

Dust wrapper is sunned, but price intact, with the front illustration taken from "The fourth horseman of the apocalypse" by Jean, Duc de Berry. Obituary (1912 - 1989) tipped in.
