The Earl - 1st US edition

by Cecelia Holland

Story of a Norman noble, the Earl of Stafford, during the 12th century. At the time, there are two rival claimants to the throne - King Stephen, a grandson of William the Conqueror - and Maud, the daughter of King Henry I, who is fighting for the throne for her son, Henry Plantagenet, husband of Eleanor of Aquitaine.

Through the Earl, we watch the political and military machinations with their accompanying moral ambiguities, play out on a stage richly painted by the author, who has the ability to bring another time and place to life.

Book is mustard boards with gold-stamped spine and front board. One corner is bumped, top page edges inked, maps and genealogy tree on front and rear endpapers. Dust jacket is intact, with only minor edge wear and one closed tear.
