The Hills of Varna - first UK edition

by Geoffrey Trease

Wonderful historic adventure story about Alan, a boy-scholar at Cambridge in 1509. Forced to flee, he travels across Europe to Venice, meets a girl, seeks a treasure and finds it, loses it, and regains it! A great yarn, good for anyone 10 or older, like the Harry Potter series. Trease was the J. K. Rowlings of the 1930's and '40's. I recall reading the story as a kid, so added this copy to my collection for that reason. Great full-page monochrome illustrations by Treyer Evans decorate each chapter.

Book has slightly bowed boards otherwise clean and sharp except for nice dedication for an 'Essay on Citizenship' dated 1949 on front end paper; tan cloth boards with titles and picture of a castle on a hill in dark brown, slightly soiled, hence very good.

Jacket, rare to find in any condition, has loss at bottom of spine, minor chips at folds, closed tear on front panel; price clipped.
