When Christ and His Saints Slept - first US edition

by Sharon Kay Penman

Henry the first dies in 1135 leaving only a daughter, Maude, as sole surviving heir. She and her husband, Geoffrey of Anjou begin the struggle to attain the crown (and the treasury in Westminster), which has been seized by her cousin Stephen. Beginning as friends, Maude and Stephen ended in the bitterest enmity, and if Stephen lost the crown, Maude would never wear it. But in the final irony for both, Maude would indeed be the mother of kings, for it was her eldest, Henry, who would establish the Plantagenet dynasty.

Book is black cloth with gold stamped spine with maps on front and rear end papers reflecting England and France of the time. Dust jacket is in fine condition, with jacket art by Raquel Jaramillo.
